Beaches can be so fun.
Especially when you can have space to spread out and have fun.I hate crowded beaches. I don’t enjoy having people right next to me when I am trying to have fun on a beach. My kids absolutely love the beach though and they don’t care at all if it’s crowded or empty. Convincing them that going to the beach won’t be fun because it’s crowded just doesn’t work. So usually when we go the kids have a blast and I’m kind of overwhelmed by the crowds the whole time. Of course, we all have fun but it would be better without the crowds that’s for certain
Enter Limantour beach in Point Reyes, CA. We have been several times now and it’s not necessarily empty but there’s so much space that you can usually find a place along the beach and you aren’t right next to someone. In peak summer the crowds do tend to grow considerably and I can’t honestly speak to how enjoyable it is at that time as we’ve never stayed, we hike a lot around this area and sometimes we stop by the bathrooms here. It’s not the kind of beach that you go to for the swimming because the water is COLD.
I have seen people get in the water here and I’ve walked in the water here but I don’t suggest a swim. If you’re looking for that you should entertain
This is the kind of beach you go to so you can play in the sand or have a get together and roast some s’mores on the beach.
Yes, you read that right you can have a fire on the beach. You must get a permit but that’s easy and doesn’t cost anything.
To obtain a burn permit you just stop at the visitor’s center before they close and ask for one there. You must sign an agreement about the rules that you must follow but that’s it. You can collect driftwood for the fire around the beach but beware there isn’t much to collect usually. We stop at a grocery store on the way and pick up a couple bundles of wood. You should also know that if the winds are above 30 mph they do not allow fires on the beach. Basically, if the wind is strong enough to blow a hat off your head it’s too windy for a fire.
Grab a picnic blanket and your favorite “picnic foods” or something you can roast over a fire and lunch is taken care of and if you want to make a day of it just pack a little extra so you have something for dinner. Don’t forget light jackets/windbreakers and sand toys and you will have an amazing laid back afternoon.
I can’t wait to go back.
Make sure you don’t forget a light jacket/ windbreaker for everyone, this one is seriously important. It’s usually a windy place so don’t forget your kites either. Hope you all enjoy and let me know if you make it over there. It’s a great place for memory making!
